Considered by many to be the finest jazz trombonist of all time, J.J. Johnson somehow transferred the innovations of Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie to his more awkward instrument, playing with such speed and deceptive ease that at one time some listeners assumed he was playing valve (rather than slide) trombone. He had an amazing career and I was fortunate enough to see him perform and meet him.
I recently ran across an audio recording of his appearence on the Marion McPartland show "Piano Jazz" in 1997. During the course of the interview the subject of "tailgate/dixieland" style trombone came up and J.J. had this to say - J.J. Johnson Speaks On Tailgate Trombone Pretty interesting words from a master trombonist. Here is a YouTube Video of J.J. at the height of his powers - "Now's The Time"
