New Orleans Musician Profile - The Great Sidney Bechet (May 14, 1897 – May 14, 1959) was an American jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, and composer.Sidney Bechet towers above all musicians who came out of New Orleans (excluding perhaps Louis Armstrong who was a genius beyond question). Bechet began playing with professional bands at 8 years old. Along with a big sound and a throbbing vibrato, he played with unequaled power and strength. Bechet's creativity was endless and his technique was always superb. He is is best remembered as the master of the soprano saxophone, but his clarinet playing was also magnificent.
